OSHA enacted a National Emphasis Program on forklifts several months ago and they are in fact keeping their inspectors accountable to the internal requirements of this program.
What are they required to do?
It is REQUIRED that every OSHA inspector audit a companies forkliftpolicies, practices, procedures, written programs, the physical competence of the forklift itself, current driver certifications, and training documents during any onsite visitt. Whether they are onsite for a separate emphasis program or accident investigation, they MUST expand their scope to include forklifts in their audit.
Below are some common forklift citations we are seeing from the inspectors.
Please feel free to use this as a printable tool to share with your team:
Costing Some Companies Thousands $$
#2: Seat Belts Not Functional: Seat belts are a must during operation. Ensure they function properly
#3: Approved Attachments: Ensure attachments are designed/certified for your specific forklift
#4: Batteries Must Be Guarded: Store in a guarded area, off the ground where forkliftsor other equipment can't damage them
#5: Driving Without a Seat Belt: Never drive without a seat belt. Yes...even for the 30 second trip
#7: Eye Wash Stations (and Proper PPE) Must Be Near/In Use at Battery/Refueling Stations: Latex gloves, splash-proof goggles, face shield, etc are all examples of possible PPE requirements
#8: Test the Amount of CO, Drivers & Workers Are Exposed To: Air sampling should be done to ensure employees are not being exposed to harmful amounts of CO due to forklift use
#9: No Modifications Allowed: Forklifts must not have any modifications or additions by which capacity or safe operation are affected
#10: All Operators MUST Be Certified: OSHA will check that each driver is certified and all training records fall within the 3-year re-certification requirements. (Be sure an employee coming with a cert from another company/location is still trained on the specific operations of your equipment and the hazards within your facility)
